OW NEW ORLEANS, LA. é Americas Greatest eed House Serving the South Exclusively 830 Rapidly proving itself the most important and valuable permanent grazing grass for the South. A perennial spreading by creeping stems which root at every joint, thus forming a close, compact turf. Compared with Bermuda Grass, Carpet Grass is its equal in feeding value; it may be grazed considerably later in the fall and earlier in the spring; it does better on poor, sandy soils and furnishes more grazing; it is better adapted to wet sour soils and thrives better under hot, humid conditions. Like Bermuda, it is palatable and relished by all livestock. It is strictly a pasture grass and stands close grazing and heavy trampling; in fact, it grows best and spreads more rapidly when closely grazed and trampling seems to improve it. Can be sown over your pres- ent pasture, creek bottoms, or cut-over woodland without plowing or discing. Produces practically year-round succulent green pasture, fully equal to Kentucky Blue Grass. Easily eradicated by plowing. It does splendidly sown with Lespedeza, Dallis Grass, Black Medic, White Clover and Bur Clover. Carpet Grass can be grown wherever the temperature does not fall below 10 degrees. Fall sowings are conducted during Sep- PF tember, October and November, and spring from February until July. It is a drought-resisting grass and furnishes fine grazing during long ~ dry spells, when all other grasses are dead. Carpet Grass is easy to : start, if you plant first quality seed. Most of the seeds on the market are low grade. Reuter’s stock is the finest available from the choicest meadows in the South, and every lot has been carefully analyzed for purity and germination in our own modern seed laboratory in charge of a graduate seed analyst. Sow at the rate of 10 to 15 lbs. per acre for pasture and 25 to 30 Ibs. for lawns, publie parks and golf courses. Lb. 40c; 5 lbs. $1.75. It will stand more drought than Bermuda. Plantings are made the year-round, but principally in late summer and early fall, and in the spring commencing in Jan- uary. Broadeast 10 to 15 Ibs. per aere if sown alone. Reuter offers both Louisiana-grown and imported seed. The growth is identical, but the imported seeds are usually harvested under more ideal weather condition which often improves the quality. Louisiana-grown seeds are highly sat- isfactory and widely used. Louisiana-Grown: Lb. 40c; 5 Ibs. $1.75. Comes nearer grow- ing year-round than any other grass. Cultivation readily kills it. Makes its fastest growth on heavy or moist bot- tomland, but gives satisfactory results on dry hill lands, and will even grow in burnt-over timber land. It stops washes and gullies. Withstands continued drought remark- ably well. We know of no better grass to withstand flood conditions on lowlands. Light freezes do not injure this grass. Due to its tuft formation and compactness of growth, it will choke out Johnson Grass and undesirable weeds. zl Station or Exp. Dear Friend: In the gigantic struggle which now encircles almost all of the civilized world, the importance of food is paramount. The old addage “an army marches on its stomach” is as true today as it ever was. Without a properly balanced diet no soldier in the field, or for that matter, no man or woman working in a munition factory can give his best. Millions of trained farm workers have been drafted into the armed forces and war factories as well. As a result, commercial production of vegetables is being hampered considerably. Furthermore, the problem of transportation is becoming more serious every day. To relieve this condition it is indeed the patriotic duty of every American with a suitable plot of ground to grow enough health-giving, vitamin-rich vegetables for his own family needs. Every “Victory Garden” planted and cultivated will require less transporta- tion of food and make it possible to use transportation for the war effort. It will mean less wear on truck tires, less use of man-power and what is more important to every home-owner, it will mean the expenditure of less money for food. What you save by growing your own food, you can profitably invest in War Stamps and Bonds. Join the ever-growing number of Victory gardeners and help win the war! Greater net re- turns may be obtained by increas- ing your crop yields at the lowest cost. Austrian Winter Peas solves this problem for you. It’s the lead- ing soil-builder and winter cover because of its large, heavy growth on practically all soils and its ability to resist winter freezes. Makes a splendid uring late winter. It grows about 5 feet high, can be planted by itself, but does fine with a light seeding of oats, rye or barley to hold vines off ground; makes a heavy tonnage of splendid hay. Pro- tects your soil, holds and increases its fertility, furnishes grazing for your livestock, or makes valuable green manure, de- caying rapidly when plowed under. Sow Austrian Winter Peas during Sep- tember through November, in drills, at the rate of 30 lbs. per acre and cover 2 inches. Also sown broadcast and disked in. Broadeasting in cotton middles and straddling the rows with a two-horse cul- tivator with the disk hillers or plows is a very good method of covering. Turn un- der during late March or early April when the green tops cut from a square 10 by 10 feet will weigh 15 to 20 Ibs. (green weight). Wait two weeks before planting the succeeding crop. Best results are obtained from a good, loamy, moist soil. Fur- nishes nutritious grazing from Novem- ber until May. It dies down as soon as the weather gets warm. If allowed to reseed itself, it will come up again the following fall. Does_well when mixed with Rye Grass and Bur Clover. Also fine on bottomlands that are subject to floods. More generally used as a pasture grass, but makes a good hay. Usually gives two cuttings a’season. It is classed as an annual. Vegetable Seeds LETMUGE With the discovery of its valuable health-giving vitamins, Lettuce has become a year-round table necessity. It is so easily grown that no garden need be without a generous supply. Culture. First sowings are made in Lower South during Sep- tember and continued through fall months. Requires rich soil, plenty of moisture, and a quick, steady growth from the time seeds are planted until the heads are ready for use. Broadcast the seed on good moist beds or sow in rows 6 inches apart, coy- ering not over % inch deep. Place burlap or old fertilizer sacks over the beds to protect from extreme heat until seeds sprout. One common cause of failure to get Lettuce to head properly is not giving plants sufficient room for development. When leaves are 2 to 3 inches long, transplant to open ground in rows: 15 to 18 inches apart and 8 to 10 inches apart in the rows. REUTER SEED CO., INc. 320 NORTH CARROLLTON AVENUE NEW ORLEANS, ee LA. ~~ from: POSTOFFICE STATE BOX NO. RURAL ROUTE STREET PLEASE WRITE PLAINLY 840A, ITALIAN OR WINTER RYE GRASS You should sow liberally of this famous quick hay and winter pasture grass. The seed cost is so reasonable. A bag (100 lbs.) will easily plant three acres. American Rye Grass is deep green in color and grows 2 to 8 feet tall. Provides continuous grazing from mid-winter until June. Furnishes rich and palat- able feed and plenty of it. Sheep, cattle, hogs, horses and poultry relish it. It supplies proteins, minerals and vitamins so badly needed by growing stock. Stands a lot of pasturing and even when grazed to the ground makes rapid renewed growth as soon as given an opportunity. Withstands most severe winters perfectly and if allowed to go to seed, will re- seed itself. However, the seed cost is so small, you can readily afford to plant it every year. Little soil preparation is neces- sary. No plowing and covering is essential, as with oats and the like. Simply sow the seed and rake in. On compact soils loosen the ground with a rake or harrow, then sow the seed broadcast and lightly harrow in if convenient. Many times seed scattered on top the ground will give good results. The seed germinates readily with sufficient moisture. In pasture mixtures it does well with Crimson Clover, Lespedeza, or other grasses and clovers. Best planting months are Sept., Oct. and Nov. Helps to solve the winter pasture problem. American Rye Grass has a wide range of soil adaptability. Makes a better growth than most grasses on lands of low fertility. Drainage is desirable, but it has a reputation as a wet land grass. Reuter offers the finest seed pr couned in Oregon—purity 99% or better—germination 90% or etter. Prices: Not prepaid: 10 Ibs. $1.00; 100 lbs. $8.00; 500 lbs. $38.75; 1,000 lbs. $75.00. EXPERIMENT STATIONS=- The State Department of Agriculture of Louisiana has issued this unqualified report about the use of Rye Grass for winter and spring pastures: “If used in the pasture, it should, in a normal sea- son, provide winter and spring grazing from November until June, or up until the hot weather of summer. There is no reason why it should not be ex- tremely valuable in pastures for winter and early spring grazing.” The largest dairy farms in the South are planting Rye Grass. It furnishes sufficient grazing to give April and May production in February and March. There is no other grass that we know of that will provide grazing during this period and even the earliest clovers do not come on until the grazing season of Rye Grass is well advanced. The un- usual merit of this grand grass is now widely recognized and it is rapidly climbing to the top as our most popular winter pasture grass. 743, A valuable new clover that should be planted on every pasture in the South. Furnishes splendid grazing from De- cember until June. Will carry 4 to 6 head of cattle per acre throughout the entire growing season. Yields 2 to 3 tons of rich, palatable hay per acre, which is easily cut and cures very quickly. Reseeds itself even when closely grazed and spreads rapidly. Makes an upright growth, 2 to 3 feet high, bears small pink flowers and seeds heavily. Will stand heav- ier, wetter lands than most clovers.
